Today’s environmental state was made aware years ago, with the 3Rs – recycle, reduce and reuse – being heavily promoted and encouraged over the years. Many individuals as well as public and private organisations today, for the better environment universally and for all, have taken it upon themselves to lead a waste-free life, making careful use of resources. One such individual was Mr. Sohrab. P. Godrej, former Chairman of the Godrej Group.
Being an advocate of environmental preservation, his passion towards safeguarding our resources and fauna, drove him to initiate projects such as the campaigns against noise pollution, deforestation and population explosion. The preservation of the Mangroves in Godrej’s industrial township of Pirojshanagar, Vikhroli is a testimony of his commitment and exemplary efforts towards nature conservation and of a haven where industry and nature co-exist.
For this invaluable contribution of his, the Rotary Club of Bombay announced the first Nisarga Mitra Award to Sohrab Godrej in 1993, as reported in this Bulletin of their Vikhroli Chapter, that vividly charts Sohrab Godrej’s journey as an environmentalist and the legacy of a greener community that he left for future generations.
