Noblesse Oblige — those who are better off in life owe an obligation to those less fortunate than themselves.
This month, we observe the death anniversary of Padma Bhushan Sohrab P Godrej, the former Chairman of Godrej, whose legacy echoes through his contributions as a visionary, a philanthropist and an industrialist rooted in moral values. The family value of selflessness shines through the holistic approach to the Godrej Industrial Township at Vikhroli and the preservation of the surrounding lush mangroves, so cherished by Sohrab Godrej.
In addition to being a voracious traveller, art and heritage enthusiast, and collector, Sohrab played a pivotal role as a member and founder of multiple welfare institutes established to foster positive change towards societal advancement. He demonstrated a strong commitment towards the environment, fulfilling social responsibility beyond the boardroom. He vigorously campaigned against the population explosion problem that was grappling India and often used a slogan - “Help Bring Our India Up – Quickly!” – during his speeches on the issue.
This document, published in Freedom First (2000), illuminates the contributions that distinguish S.P. Godrej as a remarkable individual.
