Typewriter is an intricate machinery, involving a complex interplay of keys, springs and levers like a grand piano with its keys, an analog clock with its wheels. Most of us know about the typewriter from our parents, grandparents, media, or have used it before. But for those who do not know, it is a mechanical keyboard, that by pressing a key it strikes the inked ribbon, imprinting the character on the paper. The paper moves forward, as it reaches the end of the margin the machine rings and locks the keys in place unable to type further. A manual adjustment is made by winding down a lever and pushing the paper back to its central position. This motion unlocks the locking mechanism and one can begin typing again.
(The above paragraph was misaligned intentionally to show why spacebar locking mechanism was of importance in typewriter)
It was not uncommon to make typing errors and even more so in typewriters where the keys are individually protruding. To avoid such errors while typing, the typewriters involve a locking system for the keys. Godrej introduced this locking mechanism for its space bar in July 1960, thus preventing accidental spaces while typing. Additionally, it provided ease of typing and maintained the alignment of the text with precision. This minor yet significant change enhanced the user experience, fostering brand loyalty.
