Mahatma Gandhi National Fund, also known as Gandhi Smarak Nidhi (Hindi) or Gandhi Qaumi Yaadgar Fund (Urdu), commenced in 1948. A committee, headed by Dr Rajendra Prasad was set up and a call for a nationwide funding drive was declared. Notable personalities, the rich and wealthy in society, industrialists and even common folk contributed actively. To commemorate the martyrdom of Mahatma Gandhi, these funds were to be utilized in sectors for upliftment, charitable works and social reform that embodies Gandhian ideology. Simultaneously, a portion of this fund was dedicated to collecting articles related to Mahatma Gandhi which were to be housed in a museum preserving his memory.
Since the conception of this Fund, many Godrej staff members from different locations in India had sent repetitive requests to the company for contribution. In reply, a circular was issued on 20th January 1949, informing that a considerable sum had been already contributed to the Mahatma Gandhi National Fund by the organisation.
Godrej as an enterprise is rooted in the Swadeshi movement and realized the importance of such funds playing a pivotal role in nation building. Documents like these demonstrate the enthusiasm of the staff and companies like Godrej in supporting national growth & development.
