In the mid-20th century, offices and homes underwent significant transformation, marked by a shift in design principles that defined a contemporary space. Factors such as diversifying economy, evolving consumers, space crunch and global trends became deciding factors for creating furniture that supported the cosmopolitan lifestyle. Godrej, an established manufacturer of steel furniture in India, emerged as a market leader in this segment by mid-century, and the iconic Godrej CH-1 All Steel Folding Chair was one of the products that made it happen.
Our Document of the Month, a Circular dated 20th February 1958, notifies that amidst the acute shortage of steel in the 1950s, the production of CH-1 was resumed, and it was categorized in Godrej’s regular manufacturing list. The document further highlights the star features of the CH-1: durable, stylish and a real space saver! Saving up to eight times the storage space, it could be stacked easily and provided comfort for good body posture. Moreover, the choice of steel coupled with somber colour palette and contemporary visuals reflecting the cosmopolitan lifestyle of the times, further accentuated its sophisticated appeal.
This document exemplifies the company’s ability to adapt to the design shifts and to continue making seating solutions that are both practical and stylish.
