In corporate archives, documents like circulars are not out of the ordinary. However, we come across a rather interesting document that speaks volumes about the manner of the business, its competitors, and legalities. This document dated April 17, 1964, penned by Manager N.D. Sahukar is addressed to all branches, stockists, dealers, sales offices and showrooms of Godrej products regarding a matter of urgent interest. Consecutive cases of flagrant infringement of Godrej’s trademark were occurring nationally. Godrej products attained popularity via proactive advertising and primarily for its long-standing product satisfaction. Hence it was no surprise that competitors and other manufacturers mimicked the trademark to sell their products. However, it was alarming when fraudulent trademarks were found on products that Godrej did not manufacture.
A strict legal action was called to regulate and end the infringement of the trademark. The parties found in this false practice were to be brought under legal prosecution, therefore all dealers and sales personnel were asked to forward original enquires regarding Godrej catalogues along with advertisement published locally to segregate the genuine dealers from fraudulent. Such strict action measures served to protect not only the company's brand identity but also customer interests.
